Major calices
Calices renales majores
Definition
The major calices are large tubular structures within the kidney that receive urine from multiple minor calices. Each major calyx is formed by the convergence of two or more minor calices, which collect urine from individual renal papillae. The major calices then drain into the renal pelvis, which in turn leads to the ureter.
The major calices are especially well developed and distinct in species like the ox and pig. In contrast, they may be less prominent or absent in other species such as dogs or cats, where the collecting system is simpler.
