Renal pelvis

Pelvis renalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The renal pelvis of the kidney is the funnel-shaped, proximal expansion of the upper end of the ureter that serves as the main collecting chamber for urine produced by the kidney. It receives urine from the major calyces, which in turn collect urine from the minor calyces draining the renal papillae.

The renal pelvis then channels urine into the ureter for transport to the bladder. Anatomically, the renal pelvis is considered part of the collecting system and is lined by urothelium.

The renal pelvis is lacking in bovidae.
