Palatine process
Processus palatinus
- Related terms: Palatine process of incisive bone
Definition
The palatine process (Processus palatinus) of the incisive bone is weaker than its nasal process. It is flattened dorsoventrally.
Its dorsal or nasal surface gives attachment to the median wall of the nose and, to a small extend, to the vomer; it contributes in the rest of its length to form the floor of the nose.
Its ventral or palatine surface is a part of the palatine vault.
The medial border leans against the opposite.
The lateral border, together with the body, the basis of the nasal process and the rostral extremity of the maxilla limits a long opening: the palatine fissure (Fissura palatina)-formerly called the 'incisive notch'. The summit corresponds to the palatine process of the maxillary bone.
