Vertex

Vertex

Definition

The vertex is the most dorsal point of the skull. In most domestic animals it corresponds to the occiput. It thus forms the base of the occipital region, beyond which lie the parietal, temporal, auricular and frontal regions.

Some species, such as cattle, have a slightly different skeletal anatomy; their frontal bone extends across the entire dorso-caudal surface of the skull and displaces the parietal and occipital bones caudally and ventrally.

In humans, the vertex corresponds to the top of the parietal bones.
