Subcutaneous olecranon bursa
Bursa subcutanea olecrani
Definition
The subcutaneous olecranon bursa is a superficial synovial bursa located between the skin and the olecranon process of the ulna, overlying the posterior aspect of the elbow. It forms a thin, flattened sac that allows the skin to move freely over the olecranon during elbow flexion and extension.
Function and clinical correlate
The subcutaneous olecranon bursa primarily functions to reduce friction between the skin and the olecranon, especially when the elbow rests on hard surfaces or during repetitive extension movements. Its superficial location and frequent exposure to pressure or minor trauma make it particularly susceptible to inflammation, resulting in olecranon bursitis.
