Anatomy of the chest and the lungs: anatomical illustrations

This e-Anatomy module presents an illustrated anatomy of the lungs, trachea, bronchi, pleural cavity and pulmonary vessels.
This thoracic and pulmonary anatomy tool is especially designed for students of anatomy (medical and paramedical studies).

Anatomical illustrations of the lungs

All the anatomical illustrations are original and were created by Micheau, Antoine - MD. They were drawn in Illustrator using 3D modeling derived from medical imaging (principally thoracic scan).
The anatomical drawings were organized in a fairly classical manner to be easily used as a standard anatomical atlas. The user can browse between different groups of images using the "Series" tab:

  • General Anatomy: diagrams showing the general organisation of the thorax with the pleural cavity and mediastinum
Anatomy of the lungs

  •  Histology: histological diagrams of the trachea, oesophagus, a segmental bronchus, a bronchiole and the alveolar wall.

Segmental bronchus : Histology
Segmental bronchus : Histology

  •  The bronchial tree details the trachea in anterior and posterior views as well as the bronchial tree and its various subdivisions (segmental bronchus, intrasegmental bronchi, terminal bronchiole, respiratory bronchiole, lobule and acinus).

  • Lobule: anatomical diagram showing the architecture of a pulmonary lobe (alveolar sac, alveolus, bronchiole, smooth muscle...)

Lobule - Medical illustrations : Terminal bronchiole Pulmonary alveolus Alveolar sac Alveolar duct

  • Lungs - illustrations: anatomical drawings of the gross anatomy of the lungs in various views (anterior, posterior, lateral and medial).

  • Lungs-lobes: diagrams detailing the various lung lobes (lower lobe, upper lobe, middle-right lobe, left lingula) separated by the pulmonary fissures.

Hilum of lung - Root of lung - Superior lobe; Upper lobe - Lingula of left lung - Middle lobe of right lung - Inferior lobe; Lower lobe

  •  Lungs – bronchopulmonary segments: specifies the anatomy of the various lung segments, using the international nomenclature.

Bronchopulmonary segments : Apical segment [S I] Posterior segment [S II] Anterior segment [S III] Lateral segment [S IV] Medial segment [S V] Superior segment [S VI] Superior segment (Fowler) [S VI] Medial basal segment [S VII] Medial basal segment [S VII] Medial basal segment [S VII] Anterior basal segment [S VIII] Lateral basal segment [S IX] Posterior basal segment [S X]

  • Lobar and segmental bronchi: represents the nomenclature of lobar and segmental bronchi roots.
  • Pleural cavity: diagrams illustrating the anatomy of the parietal pleural cavity with different recesses (costomediastinal and costodiaphragmatic recesses, pulmonary ligaments...)

Pleural cavity : Pleura Visceral pleura; Pulmonary pleura Serosa; Serous coat Subserosa; Subserous layer Parietal pleura Pleural cupula Costal part Diaphragmatic part Mediastinal part Serosa; Serous coat Subserosa; Subserous layer Pleural recesses Costodiaphragmatic recess Costomediastinal recess Phrenicomediastinal recess Vertebromediastinal recess Pulmonary ligament

  • Intrapulmonary blood vessels – 3D: 3D images from a thoracic angioscanner allowing a visualisation of the relationship between the bronchi, pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins in the lungs.
  • Bronchial arteries: diagram of the emergence of the bronchial arteries in the descending thoracic aorta.
  • Bronchial veins: venous circulation of the bronchi into the azygos and hemiazygos veins.
  • IASLC - Ganglionic areas: diagram of ganglionic areas numbered 1 to 14, used in clinical practice in thoracic oncology for lung cancer disease spread assessment.

Anatomical structures of the respiratory system

125 pulmonary anatomical structures were labeled. Those labels are grouped into subcategories, you can hide or show them on the "Anatomical parts" tab:

  • Trachea
  • Bronchial tree
  • Alveolus
  • Lungs
  • Bronchopulmonary segments
  • Pleura
  • Pulmonary arteries
  • Pulmonary veins
  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Thoracic lymph nodes
  • Bones; Skeletal system
  • Other structures

Terminology for the study of the anatomy of the thorax

The anatomical structures were labeled by Antoine Micheau M.D. (Radiologist, Montpellier – France), using the Terminologia Anatomica.
