Alveolar process

Processus alveolaris

  • Related terms: Alveolar process of maxilla

Definition

The thick and prominent alveolar process of the ventral margin of the maxillary bone holds the premolar and the molar teeth.

In Men, there is no interval between the canine and the serie of premolar and molar teeth.

This disposition is hardly different in Carnivorous where a short space separates the canine tooth from the first premolar.

In herbivorous on the other hand, the canine tooth is reduced or absent and the molar teeth are grouped caudally, leaving a broad interval between them and the incisive teeth: the interalveolar margin.

As a result, the ventral margin of the maxillary bone is divisible in these species into two different parts.
