Fossa for lacrimal gland; Lacrimal fossa

Fossa glandulae lacrimalis

Definition

The fossa for lacrimal gland is a shallow depression in the orbital surface of the frontal bone, at the base of the zygomatic process of the frontal bone. It corresponds to the location of the lacrimal gland.

Visible in horses, it is difficult to identify in dogs: Murphy et al (2013) have described, in some dog skulls, the fossa for lacrimal gland as a palpable depression on the ventral surface of the zygomatic process of the frontal bone.
