Fossa for lacrimal sac

Fossa sacci lacrimalis

Definition

The fossa for lacrimal sac belongs to the lacrimal bone. It is located nn the rostral part of the medial wall of the orbit, caudally to the orbital crest. It is a more or less deep depression according to the species. On the bottom of this depression, the lacrimal foramen (Foramen lacrimale), double in Pigs, opens and is followed by the lacrimal duct (Canalis lacrimalis).

  • In Equidae, it is a deep funnel shaped depression;

  • in Bulls, it is weak and the foramen is a clear carving caudally to the caudal lacrimal process,

  • in Sheeps and Dogs, it is a soft depression,

  • in Goats, there is no fossa at all,

  • in Pigs, two lacrimal foramina are placed above each other on the orbital crest or in its close neighborhood.

  • in Men, it is a broad and deep depression located at the junction between the lacrimal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla.
