Fundus of stomach

Fundus ventriculi

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The fundus of the stomach is the uppermost part of the stomach, located adjacent to the cardia.

It is characterized by its dome-shaped structure and is primarily involved in the storage of ingested food and the production of gastric secretions. The fundus contains numerous gastric glands, which include parietal cells that secrete hydrochloric acid and chief cells that produce pepsinogen. This region is also involved in the production of intrinsic factor, which is essential for vitamin B12 absorption.
