Glandula superficialis
Glandula superficialis
Definition
The glandula superficialis of the third eyelid is an accessory lacrimal gland attached to the base of the cartilage. Its excretory ducts open onto the posterior surface of the third eyelid. In pigs, cattle and rabbits, it is accompanied by the glandula profunda.
This is a seromucous gland in most domestic animals, except cats and horses, where it is serous.
