Inferior tarsus

Tarsus inferior

Definition

Felipe Barona Lopez

The inferior tarsus is a dense lamina of collagen fibers continuous with the orbital septum, located between the orbicularis oculi muscle and the palpebral conjunctiva, near the margin of the superior eyelid.

There is a superior and inferior tarsus, each ensuring the tension of their respective eyelids. They are anchored on either side by the medial and lateral palpebral ligaments. The tarsus can be more or less developed, depending on the species, being particularly pronounced in pigs, while in dogs it is described as being only weakly pronounced, or even absent.
