Medial palpebral commissure

Commissura palpebrarum medialis

Definition

Felipe Barona Lopez

The medial palpebral commissure is the medial junction between the margins of the superior and inferior eyelids.

It extends briefly into the nasal region, creating a space for the accumulation of tears, known as the lacrimal lake. The closely spaced lacrimal punctum enables tears to be evacuated. The lacrimal caruncle forms an excrescence on this commissure. Behind this commissure, the edge of the third eyelid can usually be seen.
