Canalis inguinalis [Spatium inguinale]

  • Synonym: Inguinal canal

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The inguinal canal (inguinal space) is a short, oblique passage through the abdominal wall located in the groin region. It serves as a pathway for structures such as the spermatic cord in males and the round ligament of the uterus in females to pass between the abdominal cavity and the external genitalia.

The canal is bordered by the deep inguinal ring (internal opening) and the superficial inguinal ring (external opening), and is composed of muscular and aponeurotic layers. It also contains the genitofemoral nerve and blood vessels.
