Lateral nasal gland
Glandula nasalis lateralis
Definition
The lateral nasal gland is a serous gland. In the dog it is located in the mucosa of the maxillary recess. It is thickest at the level of the fourth superior premolar, where its ducts unite and pass rostrally to form one major duct that opens on the lateral wall of the nasal vestibule, caudally and dorsal to that of the nasolacrimal duct. The lateral nasal gland supplies the water necessary for heat dissipation during panting. This function of the lateral nasal gland is in a sense analogous to that of the sweat glands of humans.
