  • Eponym: Jacobson

Definition

Chloé Paris

The vomeronasal organ or Jacobson’s organ is a structure responsible for detecting semiochemical signals; it is involved in the Flehmen response. It is weak and vestigial in higher mammals where it is often better represented in the fetus than in the adult. It is even and asymmetrical, located in the floor of the nasal cavity and constituted by the vomeronasal duct, longitudinal and blind, generally connected to the incisive duct and protected by a cartilaginous capsule.
