The lateral thalamic nuclei are subdivided into dorsocaudal and ventral groups. The dorsocaudal group includes the lateral dorsal, the lateral caudal nucleus, and the pulvinar. The ventral group comprises several nuclei involved in movement and sensory perception: ventral rostral, ventral lateral, and ventral caudal.
