Nasolacrimal canal

Canalis nasolacrimalis

Definition

Mayla Alcobaça, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The nasolacrimal canal opens in the lateral walls of the nasal cavity for the passage of the nasolacrimal duct.

Variation:

In equines, it is clearly visible and located at the junction between the skin and the mucous membrane, approximately 5 cm posterior to the ventral commissure of the nostril.

In ruminants, it is located in the lateral part of the nasal vestibule, on the lateral border of the ala of the nose. Decongestion of the nasolacrimal duct allows access to the conjunctiva. The nasal surface forms the rostral boundary of the frontal and maxillary sinuses and is traversed almost horizontally by the nasolacrimal duct.
