Bony nasal septum

Septum nasi osseum

Definition

Mayla Alcobaça, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The bony nasal septum longitudinally divides the nasal cavity into right and left sides. It extends caudally to the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone and rostrally to the cartilage of the nasal septum. The ventral part of the caudal extension of the bony nasal septum separates the choanae.

Variation :

In dogs, ossification occurs in the caudal and dorsal portions of the septum, while the outer part of the rostral portion, which projects beyond the skull, remains cartilaginous, thus contributing to the movement of the nose.

In pigs, the snout is supported by a small bone positioned in the opposite direction to the end of the bony nasal septum.
