Definition
The zona incerta is a region of the subthalamus, located ventromedial to the thalamic reticular nucleus.
Through spontaneously active inhibitory neurons, the zona incerta suppresses the activity of the ventral caudal thalamic nuclei that relay sensory information to the neocortex.
