Definition
The external layer corresponds to the most superficial aponeurotic covering that covers the ventral surface of the rectus abdominis muscle. It consists of the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle of the abdomen and, in certain species and regions, may also receive contributions from the internal oblique muscle of the abdomen.
