Definition

Antoine Micheau

The internal layer of the sheath of the rectus abdominis is the portion of the rectus sheath located deep to the rectus abdominis muscle. It is primarily formed by:

  • The transversus abdominis aponeurosis

  • Part of the internal oblique aponeurosis (depending on species and the level along the abdominal wall)

In carnivores and ruminants, the composition of the sheath can vary along the length of the abdomen, with the posterior lamina being absent below the arcuate line.
