  • Related terms: Internal layer of sheat of recti abdominis

Definition

Antoine Micheau, Anne-Sophie Emeric

The internal layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath is the part located deep within the rectus abdominis muscle. It is mainly formed by the aponeurosis of the transverse abdominis muscle and, depending on the species, part of the aponeurosis of the internal oblique muscle.

Variation:

In carnivores and ruminants, the composition of the sheath may vary along the length of the abdomen, with the internal layer being absent below the arcuate line.
