Lateral rhinal sulcus

Sulcus rhinalis lateralis

  • Synonym: Lateral rhinal groove

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The lateral rhinal sulcus is a groove on the ventrolateral surface of the cerebral hemisphere that separates the rhinencephalon from the neocortex. It has a rostral and a caudal portion, thereby delimiting the rhinencephalon in relation to the dorsal cortical structures.

This sulcus serves a topographical role in the organization of the telencephalon, distinguishing the phylogenetically ancient olfactory region from the rest of the cerebral cortex.
