Piriform lobe

Lobus piriformis

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The piriform lobe is a structure of the basal and caudal part of the rhinencephalon, involved in conscious olfaction. It receives axons from the mitral cells of the olfactory bulb via the lateral olfactory tract.

It consists of a flat rostral part, separated from the larger caudal part, the proper piriform, which is covered by different types of cortex and overlies the amygdala, hippocampus, and lateral ventricle.
