Parietal peritoneum
Peritoneum [Peritonaeum] parietale
Definition
The parietal peritoneum is the outer layer of the peritoneum that lines the interior surface of the abdominal wall and the undersurface of the diaphragm.
It is a serous membrane composed of a single layer of mesothelial cells supported by a submesothelial interstitial tissue, which includes fibroblasts, adipocytes, collagen fibers, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and capillaries. This structure plays a crucial role in providing a protective barrier and facilitating the movement of fluids and cells within the abdominal cavity.
The parietal peritoneum is less permeable compared to the visceral peritoneum, which covers the abdominal organs.
