Visceral peritoneum

Peritoneum [Peritonaeum] viscerale

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The visceral peritoneum is the inner layer of the peritoneum that covers the abdominal organs.

It is a serous membrane composed of a single layer of mesothelial cells resting on submesothelial interstitial tissue, which includes fibroblasts, adipocytes, collagen fibers, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and capillaries. This structure is essential for maintaining intra-abdominal homeostasis and plays a role in various physiological processes, including the exchange of molecules and production of peritoneal fluid. The visceral peritoneum is distinct from the parietal peritoneum, which lines the abdominal wall and diaphragm.
