Zygomatic process

Processus zygomaticus

  • Related terms: Zygomatic process of frontal bone

Definition

The zygomatic process (Processus zygomaticus) of the frontal bone is a strong protrusion whose development varies much according to the species.

In Carnivorous, Pigs, Glires, it is a simple spike that limits incompletely the entry of the orbit rearward, without reaching the zygomatic arch.

In Equidae and Ruminants, it forms a true bridge that completes the entry of the orbit and ends by a rough surface on the zygomatic arch.

In Men, this bridge is even completed by a strong bony plate that creates a wall between the orbit and the temporal fossa.
