尺神经掌侧指总神经是皮支，起自尺神经浅支，而尺神经浅支是尺神经在手掌内的终末支之一。

尺神经越过腕部后，其浅支进入手掌。进入手掌后，浅支同时发出肌支和皮支。掌侧指总神经属于尺神经浅支皮支的组成部分，亦称为外侧掌侧指神经。尺神经掌侧指总神经进一步分为两支掌侧指固有神经，支配环指与小指相邻侧的皮肤，具体为小指的外侧面及环指的内侧面。
