Sinus noncoronarius aortae

  • Latin synonym: Sinus posterior aortae
  • Synonym: Posterior aortic sinus

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The non-coronary aortic sinus refers the aortic sinus of Valsalva, that does not give rise to a coronary artery.

The non-coronary sinus is located posteriorly in the aortic root, adjacent to the interatrial septum and known as the posterior aortic sinus. Unlike the right and left coronary sinuses, which give rise to the right and left coronary arteries respectively, the non-coronary sinus does not have an associated coronary artery ostium.

The non-coronary sinus forms part of the aortic root and is bordered by the non-coronary cusp of the aortic valve. It is situated between the right and left coronary sinuses and lies closest to the interatrial septum and the membranous septum of the heart. This anatomical relationship is clinically relevant during procedures involving the aortic root or the interatrial septum, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement or electrophysiological interventions.

The non-coronary sinus should not be confused with the term "coronary sinus", which is a venous structure located in the posterior atrioventricular groove. The right coronary sinus is a component of the aortic root and does not have direct venous drainage or a role in the coronary venous system.
