Ascending mesocolon

Mesocolon ascendens

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The ascending mesocolon is the portion of the mesentery that suspends the ascending colon from the dorsal body wall. It contains blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves that supply the ascending colon.

Unlike in humans, where the ascending colon is often retroperitoneal, in many animals (such as dogs and horses), it is intraperitoneal and mobile, making the mesocolon functionally important in maintaining gut positioning.
