Caudal hypothalamic region

Regio hypothalamica caudalis

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The caudal hypothalamic region corresponds to the posterior portion of the hypothalamus, including the mammillary nuclei (medial, lateral, and cinereous), the caudal periventricular nucleus, the premammillary nucleus, the lateral hypothalamic nucleus, the perifornical hypothalamic nucleus, and the dorsal and dorsocaudal areas.

These structures project to thalamic nuclei via the mamillothalamic tract and to the brainstem via the mamillotegmental tract and mammillary peduncle, contributing to memory regulation, endocrine functions, and sympathetic activity.
