External acoustic meatus

Meatus acusticus externus

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The external acoustic meatus is an auditory passage located on the lateral side of the cranium and forms part of the temporal bone. It consists of a distal cartilaginous portion and a proximal bony portion.

This canal opens to the outside through the external acoustic opening and extends distally on the cartilaginous portion of the external auditory canal, ending medially at the eardrum, which it protects and supports.
