Definition
The membranous part of the interventricular septum is the upper and posterior, small, thin, fibrous portion of the interventricular septum located immediately below the aortic valve, at the superior aspect of the interventricular septum, adjacent to the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve and the right and posterior cusps of the aortic valve.
The membranous septum is closely related to the atrioventricular conduction system, specifically the bundle of His, which passes through or just beneath it, making this region clinically significant during surgical and interventional procedures.
The membranous septum is divided into two parts: the atrioventricular part (that corresponds to the atrioventricular septum), which separates the right atrium from the left ventricle, and the interventricular component, which separates the right and left ventricles.
