Gastrophrenic ligament

Ligamentum gastrophrenicum

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The gastrophrenic ligament is a peritoneal fold that connects the fundus of the stomach to the diaphragm. It is part of the greater omentum and helps anchor the stomach in the cranial abdomen.

Location: The ligament is located in the cranial abdominal cavity, just caudal to the diaphragm and adjacent to the cardiac region and fundus of the stomach.

Peritoneal Continuity: It is continuous with the greater omentum and often borders the omental bursa, contributing to the supraomental recess.

Attachments:

  • Cranially to the diaphragm

  • Caudally to the gastric fundus

  • Medially it may lie close to the esophageal hiatus

Function: While it provides mechanical support to the stomach by maintaining its position, it also forms part of the peritoneal boundaries that help define compartments within the abdominal cavity.
