Infraorbital canal

Canalis infraorbitalis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The infraorbital canal is a bony passageway for the infraorbital nerve of the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve, as well as the infraorbital artery and vein. It is located on the facial surface of the body of the maxillary bone: it extends from the maxillary foramen caudally to the infraorbital foramen rostrally. The infra-orbital canal gives rise to the incisivomaxillary canal.

Constant in mammals, the infraorbital canal's morphology can vary significantly among species, reflecting differences in craniofacial anatomy.
