Definition
The jugular process of the occipital bone is a bony prominence that projects laterally in the ventrolateral region of the occipital bone, lateral to the base of the occipital condyle.
In domestic mammals, the jugular process projects to form a second process, known as the paracondylar process, which has rough lateral surfaces suitable for muscle insertion.
Note that for some other authors like Barone, the paracondylar process simply corresponds to the apex of the jugular process.
