Definition

Andréa lopes da Costa

The lateral part of the occipital bone is one of its three parts, along with the basilar (rostrally) and the squamous (dorsally) parts.

It forms the lateral boundary of the foramen magnum. It is also where the occipital condyles are formed, which, together with the first cervical vertebra, the atlas, form the atlantooccipital joint.
