Hypoglossal canal

Canalis nervus hypoglossi

Definition

Marjorie Champarou

The hypoglossal canal lies at the bottom of the ventral condylar fossa, in a deep depression on the exocranial surface of the lateral part of the occipital bone, rostrolaterally behind the condyle. It passes right through the bone to allow passage of the twelfth cranial nerve, the hypoglossal nerve.
