Jugular process

Processus jugularis

  • Related terms: Jugular process (Paracondylar process)

Definition

The jugular process of the occipital bone is located lateraly to the jugular foramen, corresponding to a transverse process of a vertebra.

In man and domestic mammals, the jugular process projects laterally and ventraly form the base of the condyle occipital, forming an apophysis for muscular attachment. The jugular process is then called "paracondylar process" .

Note that for some other authors like Barone, the paracondylar process simply corresponds to the apex of the jugular process.
