Temporal fascia

Fascia temporalis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The temporal fascia is a well developed fascia that covers the temporalis muscle and masseter muscle. It is divided into a superficialis layer and a deep layer.

The temporal fascia is attached to the temporal line, external sagittal crest of occipital bone, nuchal crest and zygomatic arch. It can fuse with the periosteum of the parietal bone when this bone is not covered by the temporalis muscle, as it is often the case in brachycephalic dogs. The fascia temporalis continues ventrally with the masseteric fascia and parotid fascia.
