Groove for the caudal meningeal artery
Sulcus arteria meningeae caudalis
Definition
The lateral surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone is irregular and rough and covered in great part by the caudal border of the squamous part. It can present vascular impressions: The most visible, in Horses, is the groove for the caudal meningeal artery (Sulcus arteria meningea caudalis) that ends on the mastoid foramen (Foramen mastoideum)*, through which the caudal meningeal artery reaches the temporal meatus.
*In other species, the mastoid foramen is more caudal, opened at the limit of the occipital bone;
in Pigs, the mastoid foramen is missing
