Petrotympanic fissure

Fissura petrotympanica

  • Eponym: Glaserian

Definition

The petrotympanic fissure is a tiny fissure often found in the temporal bone within the infratemporal fossa. The fissure separates the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone into the articular tubercle in front and the tympanic section of the temporal bone behind. The chorda tympani nerve, a branch of the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve), traverses this fissure and unites with the lingual nerve in the infratemporal fossa.
