Tympanic cavity

Cavum tympani

Definition

The tympanic cavity (Cavum tympani) is carved within the auricular part* of the temporal bone, between the petrous part, the tympanic part, the endotympanic part when it exists, and the cavities of the inner ear**.

*The auricular part is located between the squamous part that covers it rostrolaterally, the parietal bone and the occipital bone.

**Together, all these structures of the petrous part form the bony labyrinth (Labyrinthus osseus).
