Petrosquamous fissure

Fissura petrosquamosa

Definition

Mayla Alcobaça, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The petrosquamous fissure is a small opening formed between the petrous and squamous parts of the temporal bone. This structure allows small vessels to pass through, connecting the petrous sinus to the external region of the cranial cavity.

The petrosquamous fissure is present in equines, sheep, goats, and pigs, but in other species it is completely ossified. This fissure has been widely described in humans, but little studied in animals.
