Orbital process

Processus orbitalis

  • Related terms: Orbital process of palatine bone

Definition

The dorsal border of the perpendicular process of the palatine bone is divided into two extensions:

·      A lateral one, the orbital process (Processus orbitalis), that goes towards the frontal bone in the orbital wall.

·      The other one, the sphenoidal process (Processus sphenoidalis) goes more medially, under the body of the presphenoid bone.

These extensions, very developed in Men, are weaker or missing in in the other domestic animals.

In Equidae and to a smaller degree in Pigs, the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone is carved by an extension of the sphenoidal sinus (Sinus sphenoidalis).
