Maxillary surface
Facies maxillaris
Definition
The maxillary surface of the palatine bone is the irregular lateral surface of the perpendicular (vertical) plate of this bone.
Connected to the maxilla by its rostral portion, it is therefore rough and forms, via a deep groove, the greater palatine canal.
Its middle portion is hollowed out by the pterygopalatine fossa, and at the base of this fossa lies the caudal palatine foramen, the caudal opening of the greater palatine canal.
Its rough caudal portion joins the pterygoid process of the basisphenoid bone.
