Lateralis nasi muscle
Musculus lateralis nasi
- Synonym: Lateral muscle of nose
Definition
On the side of the nose, the nasal muscle (M.nasalis) is divided in Men in two parts:
-a transverse part (Pars transversa), the broader, extended from the back of the nose to the groove of the wing of the nose and the upper lip,
-and the alar part (Pars alaris), much weaker, laid on the inferior part of the wing of the nose.
In domestic Mammals, these two parts are completely separated, probably due to the great volume and the different conformation of the nasal region. Their respective development varies much according to the species and one or the other can even be missing. The division that corresponds in Men to the transversal part is here the lateral nasal muscle (M.lateralis nasi). The other will be described as the dilator of nostril.
Functions: this muscle can compress the nostril, but can also move the surrounding skin, change the shape of the nostril or lower it.
Vessels and nerves: the blood comes, according to the species, from the lateral nasal artery or from the upper labial artery. The motricity comes from the dorsal buccal branch of the facial nerve.
