Crural retinaculum of extensors
Retinaculum extensorum crurale
Definition
Within the fibrous system of the dorsal surface of the foot, there are three levels of contentious reinforcements:the crural, tarsal, and metatarsal retinaculums, whose disposition varies according to the species.
The retinaculum of crural extensors -formerly 'proximal retinaculum', is constant and the more important. It is a solid fibrous transversal lamina that constitutes the demarcation between the crural fascia and the dorsal fascia of hindfoot. This lamina, attached to the dorsal surface of each malleolus, maintains the tendons of
-the tibial cranial muscle,
-the long extensor of the digits,
-the long extensor muscle of the first digit (Men, Carnivorous, Pigs)
-the third fibular muscle (Ruminants, Pigs ans Equidae).
