Tarsal retinaculum of extensors

Retinaculum extensorum tarsale

Definition

The retinaculum of tarsal extensors has a very variable conformation. It is reserved to the tendon of the long extensor muscle of the digits in Carnivorous, Rabbits, Pigs and Equidae, where it is inserted, in a variable way according to the species, on the dorsal surface of the tarsal bones, in the surroundings of the calcaneocuboid joint. It is also qualified the 'cuboid bridle' in Equidae. It is broad, very developed and complex in Men, where it maintains the same tendons as the crural retinaculum. It is absent in Equidae.
