Anatomy atlas of the canine ear: external, middle and internal ear

Introduction

Ear problems in dogs are a very common reason for veterinary visits. A good knowledge of the anatomy is essential to correctly perform an exploration and assess the condition of the auditory canal (otoscopic exam, X-rays, CT scan) or if considering ear surgery (trauma, congenital or acquired ear canal stenosis, otitis media, tumors). Inner ear problems (deafness, ataxia) may warrant MRI scans, which are difficult to interpret without a good understanding of anatomy.

Therefore, this vet-Anatomy module contains illustrations dedicated to the anatomy of the dog’s external, middle and internal ear. These fully labeled anatomical illustrations are presented as a comprehensive atlas of the auditory and vestibular system. This atlas is specifically designed to help students and practicing veterinarians, whether ENT specialists or not, understand the anatomy of the many structures associated with the ear.

Material and methods

57 unique medical illustrations have been created, depicting the auricle, external acoustic meatus, tympanic membrane, tympanic cavity, auditory ossicles, auditory tube, and also the bony labyrinth, the membranous labyrinth or the cochlea and the spiral organ.

These anatomical illustrations were done by Marjorie Champarou, Scientific illustrator (IMAIOS - Montpellier, France), under the anatomical and scientific supervision of Stephan Mahler, DVM (IMAIOS - Montpellier, France) and Antoine Micheau, MD (Radiologist, IMAIOS - Montpellier, France).
The otoscopy image in this atlas was provided by Sebastien VIAUD, DVM, dip. ECVD (AniCura AQUIVET - Mérignac, France).

The anatomical structures were labeled, following the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (sixth edition - 2017 by ICVGAN), and have been grouped into different themes:

  • General anatomy
  • Auricle
  • Cartilages of ear
  • Temporal bone
  • Auditory ossicles
  • Joints of auditory ossicles
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles
  • Tympanic membrane
  • Tympanic cavity
  • Auditory tube
  • Bony labyrinth
  • Membranous labyrinth
  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Lymph nodes
  • Nerves
